Picture of Original Lincoln ClinicThe Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic is the first and oldest private, freestanding community based, non-profit treatment facility of its kind in the Nation.

I
n 1945 Neil Kennedy started an alcohol information and speakers service called the Youngstown Committee on Alcoholism.

Encouraged by Neil, Jack Deibel, a local businessman, opened a small treatment facility for alcoholics called The Lincoln Avenue Hospital in 1946.

In 1947 Neil Kennedy became the first Executive Director of the newly named Alcoholic Clinic of Youngstown.

The clinic remained on Lincoln Avenue until the mid 1960's after a brief stay at the old TB Sanitarium on Kirk Road., it moved to its current location on Rush Boulevard in Youngstown in 1967.

The Rush Boulevard facility was built and opened debt free having raised all of its construction costs from private donations from the community.

From these pioneering roots the clinic has grown, expanding its focus to include treatment of both alcohol and other drug dependencies, and added new programs and services. Some of the landmark events have included:

  • Accreditations by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and Certification by The Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services.
  • The development of Employee Assistance Consultation Services
  • The addition of Intensive Outpatient and Day Treatment services
  • The addition of a new patient residence wing, again opened debt free
  • The opening of Fellowship Hall, a meeting place and drop in center for recovering people
  • The consolidation of all programs under a new unified name: The Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic
  • The development of the Prevention Partners Plus Program
  • Satellite facilities  were opened in Austintown and Howland
  • Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic affiliated with Gateway Rehabilitation Center, a nationally acclaimed pioneer in alcohol and other drug dependency treatment.
  • Collaboration with Mahoning County Juvenile Court in the development of the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Program for adolescents at the Juvenile Detention Center.
